Welcome

This project is focusing on development of wheelchair seating system that are capable to remind individuals with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) to perform Pressure Relief Activity (PRA) in order to prevent development of Pressure Ulcer (PU). Paraplegic people are indeed very often in seated posture because of their motor disability, and do not feel the paraesthesia signal from their buttock. In this case, they will not change their buttock position regularly therefore pressure ulcer happen. In this project, we hypothesised by providing this training system, neurologically impaired people can avoid PU.

People with SCI are advised to perform PRA including push up, forward lean, and lateral weight shift every 15 to 30 minutes time intervals to prevent the development of PU. Most of the doctors have problems with patient who are not performing this PRA while they are not under observation of doctor and nurse. The system developed in this thesis is made up of 16” (w) x 16” (d) x 2” (h) cushion with Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor and Light Emitting Diode (LED) sandwiched between the cushion connected to timer, programmed using Arduino Uno. Users, either the patient themselves or the carer, can select suitable time interval for PRA and system acts as an alarm system.
